Genuine, OEM or Aftermarket: Which Chinese Car Parts Should Distributors Buy?

A practical comparison of genuine, OEM and aftermarket Chinese car parts, including evidence buyers should check before payment.

Choose by required assurance, application and commercial purpose

Distributors should not treat genuine, OEM and aftermarket parts as three grades on one simple quality ladder. A genuine part is sold in the vehicle maker's branded service packaging and under its part number. An OEM part is made by an original-equipment manufacturer, but the exact product and sales channel may differ from the vehicle maker's boxed service part. An aftermarket part is produced for replacement use outside the original vehicle maker's service channel.

The right choice depends on the vehicle, component risk, customer expectation, destination rules and evidence available for the exact SKU. Genuine parts suit customers who require original branding and traceability. Verified aftermarket parts can be commercially sensible for common wear items and older vehicles when fitment, performance evidence and local compliance are clear.

Understand what each label proves

“Genuine” describes the branded service channel, not a visual style. Verify the part number on the product label, original packaging, manufacturer or brand markings and consistency with the EPC reference. Ask for current, clear photographs of the actual item and packaging before payment. Catalogue pictures or a logo placed on a quotation are not enough.

“OEM” is often used loosely. A company may supply original equipment in one category but sell a different specification in the aftermarket. Ask whether the quoted line is the vehicle maker's genuine boxed part, an OE-supplier branded replacement, or another product made to the supplier's specification. The quotation should state the actual condition and brand rather than relying on the word OEM.

“Aftermarket” covers a wide range. It includes established replacement brands as well as unverified products. Judge the specific part through its number, application, material or technical specification, manufacturing evidence, markings, sample and inspection plan. Use the OEM Cross Reference to organize original and replacement references without assuming that every cross-reference is an approved interchange.

Verify genuine parts before paying

For a genuine-parts request, ask for photographs that show the complete original package, all labels, the printed OEM number, security or traceability markings where present, and the part itself from useful angles. Compare the number with the VIN-based EPC result. Check side, color, connector, production date conditions and supersession notes.

Photographing an original parts box and its security sticker before payment

Keep the supplier's photos linked to the quotation line. If the supplied number differs from the requested number, require an explained supersession rather than accepting “new number” without evidence. For mixed orders, inspect labels and cartons by SKU so one genuine line does not imply that every line has the same source.

A paid sample can confirm labeling, dimensions, finish, connector position and packaging. PartSail states that paid samples are available and sample cost can be refundable against bulk orders. Confirm the credit condition in the quotation. A sample proves the sample, so batch identity and packaging still need inspection.

Use aftermarket parts where the evidence supports them

Aftermarket parts are often reasonable for service items such as filters, selected braking components, suspension wear parts and other repeat replacements, especially for older vehicles where genuine service-channel supply is limited or uneconomic. The decision should follow local demand and regulatory requirements, not a blanket claim that aftermarket is always equivalent.

Common wear parts where verified aftermarket options often make sense

Ask for product-specific evidence. PartSail lists IATF 16949:2016, ECE R90, ISO 9001:2015 and CE among available certifications, but these do not all apply to every SKU. Management-system certification differs from product approval. ECE R90 concerns specified replacement braking products and applications. Review relevant documents through the certifications page, then request the exact scope, holder and application evidence needed for the order.

Do not use price alone to choose a safety-relevant component. Compare fitment evidence, material or performance specification where available, marking, packaging, sample results, inspection criteria and importer requirements.

Are Chinese car parts good quality?

Chinese car parts can be good quality, but country of origin alone does not establish quality. China contains vehicle makers, OE suppliers, specialized aftermarket factories and traders serving different specifications. The useful question is whether the exact quoted SKU matches the required vehicle, documented specification and destination obligation, and whether production can be checked consistently.

Before ordering, send VIN or OEM references and confirm fitment. Define labels, dimensions, visible workmanship, packaging and any product-specific test or approval evidence. PartSail offers neutral, custom-brand, color-box and bulk export packaging; packaging choice should be fixed before production. MOQ is negotiable from 100–200 sets per SKU, with mixed containers supported, and the stated lead time is 15–35 days depending on quantity and customization.

A distributor therefore buys evidence, not a category label. Genuine, OEM and aftermarket can each be appropriate when the commercial description is precise and the part is traceable to the vehicle, specification and agreed inspection standard.
